Description:This position constructs, maintains and repairs exhibit cabinetry and display work.

•Construct exhibits/displays and cabinetry emphasizing high quality finish work using wood plastics, wood products, plastic laminates, fabrics, metals, etc.

•Layout cabinet work from plans and sketches.

•Repair exhibits/displays as requested using cabinetmaking skills.

•Work with designers and technical personnel to resolve technical and mechanical problems related to exhibit design.

•Produce exhibit items for finished
exhibitory within constraints of exhibit timelines and budget.

•Produce exhibit items which meet quality standards.

•Work with and support volunteers throughout the museum.

•This position is non-exempt, paid hourly.

Working Conditions:

•Physical Demands: 10% Sitting 40% Standing 50% Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling 5-100 Pounds

•Vision requirements include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus).

•Work environment includes work near moving mechanical parts, , fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, , and risk of electric shock.

•Noise level ranges from moderate (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic), Loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment), to very loud (examples: jack hammer work, front row at rock concert).

“Performing the following will involve driving to various locations outside OMSI’s corporate headquarters:”

•Travel to host sites for exhibit installation and dismantling of OMSI’s exhibits and coordinate with host site staff and installation crews to assist with the unloading, unpacking, installation, dismantling, packing and loading of exhibits.

•Assume other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Production Manager.


•Thorough knowledge of all standard tools and processes for production of cabinets and wood products.

•Thorough knowledge of plastic laminate production.

•Working knowledge of mechanical devices and their incorporation into exhibits.

•Working knowledge of electrical construction as related to exhibits.

•Demonstrated ability to produce quality products in a production environment.

•Working knowledge of blueprints, and visual and verbal methods of communication.

•Demonstrated organizational, communication and project management skills.

•Ability to work with designers and technical personnel to resolve mechanical and technical problems related to exhibit design.

•Ability to work with outside sources to acquire technical and material information.

•Strong customer service skills.

•Professional communication skills, both written and oral.

•Excellent organizational, analytical and problem solving skills.

•Strong time management skills.

•Excellent attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.

•Museum experience.



•Minimum 4 years experience as a cabinetmaker or exhibits builder with emphasis on plastic laminate and finish carpentry.

•Minimum 1 year of coordination and project management skills.

•Minimum 1 year of experience working with the public, formal and informal settings.

•Thorough knowledge of all standard tools and processes for production of cabinets and wood products.

•Thorough knowledge of plastic laminate production.


•Bilingual - Spanish/English.

•Experience working with volunteers.



•Pre-employment and/or pre-duty checks, such as criminal background check, and reference checks.

•If driving required: a valid driver’s license and requirements in the MVR Policy including passing Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and Alcohol & Drug Test for non-CDL Drivers Policy, including pre-duty drug test.
